Paulette M. Bethel, PhD is the creator of the NPE Identity Disruption Trauma Recovery Model™, the first framework specifically designed to address the unique trauma of unexpected parentage discoveries. Her pioneering model outlines the emotional, psychological, and identity-related impacts of these revelations, establishing it as a groundbreaking tool in trauma recovery. She is a certified trauma recovery coach, columnist, writer, and retired licensed therapist.
Raised in the Catholic tradition, she attended Catholic schools through ninth grade and later explored various faith traditions, eventually finding a meaningful connection with Unity Church. This journey has given her valuable insights into how religious environments influence personal and spiritual well-being.
In addition to her trauma recovery work, Dr. Bethel served as Rear Commander during Operation Provide Comfort, a U.S.-led coalition mission in northern Iraq. Her leadership, including managing the aftermath of a “friendly fire” incident and significant loss of life, deepened her understanding of trauma in high-stress environments. Her experience supporting military families, Third Culture Kids (TCKs), and Military Kids also broadened her expertise in addressing trauma related to displacement and cultural transitions.
Dr. Bethel’s background includes marriage and family therapy, international education, and leadership in nonprofit organizations supporting foster families. At the Religious Trauma Network, she brings her expertise and compassion to foster healing for those recovering from spiritual and emotional trauma.
“Having walked through my own journey of religious exploration and healing, I am deeply committed to creating spaces where individuals can find both safety and belonging as they recover their spiritual and emotional selves.” – Dr. Paulette Bethel
